Empowering Women Through Practical Skills, Health Awareness & Learning

Established in 2074 B.S. (जि.प्र.का. दर्ता नं. – ३२२/०७४ | DAO Regd. No. 322/074) at Maitidevi-29, Kathmandu, Nepal, Thaili Nepal Foundation works alongside local communities in four core areas: adaptive teaching for older women, reproductive health awareness, sewing & crocheting workshops with social entrepreneurship, and women-led community businesses such as incense and candle making.

Our Philosophy: Community, Dignity & Self-Reliance

Named after the traditional Nepali “Thaili” (a woven drawstring pouch women use to safeguard household savings), our work brings women together in neighborhood learning circles, skill workshops, and shared micro-enterprises.

Types of Projects We Run

Community Initiatives & Programs

We focus on practical programs that bring women together in local neighborhoods—building literacy, reproductive health awareness, handcraft skills, and home-based micro-enterprises.

01Community Learning Circles • Adult Education
Ongoing

Adaptive Literacy & Everyday Learning Circles for Older Women

Informal, judgment-free learning sessions tailored for older women to build practical reading, writing, and everyday numeracy skills at their own pace.

Traditional schooling models rarely fit the needs of older women who have spent decades caring for families without formal literacy. This program uses shared community spaces, simple slates, notebooks, and clear learning materials to teach practical literacy and numeracy. Sessions are scheduled around household routines and emphasize immediate, real-life dignity—such as signing documents independently instead of using a thumbprint, reading health instructions, dialing contacts, and keeping track of daily expenses and savings.

02Neighborhood Women's Groups • Health Awareness
Ongoing

Community Reproductive Health & Hygiene Awareness Dialogues

Safe, conversational gatherings that break taboos around reproductive health, menstrual hygiene, and women's physical wellbeing.

Meaningful health awareness relies on trust and open conversation. Through neighborhood gatherings, Thaili Nepal Foundation facilitates honest, respectful discussions on reproductive health, menstrual hygiene management, age-related health changes, and preventive care. By creating a comfortable space where women can ask questions openly without embarrassment, the program helps participants look after their own health and support their daughters and neighbors with accurate information.

03Grassroots Skill Training • Livelihood & Craft
Ongoing

Sewing, Crocheting & Social Entrepreneurship Workshop

Practical training in sewing, tailoring, and crocheting combined with social entrepreneurship skills to help women earn independently.

Focused on tangible skills that can be practiced at home and in community groups, these workshops bring women together to learn sewing, basic tailoring, and crocheting—including crafting traditional pouches ('Thaili'), winter wear, and household textiles. Beyond craft technique, the workshops introduce social entrepreneurship fundamentals: how to calculate fair prices for handmade work, pool resources to buy thread and fabric together, and sell finished items within local community networks.

Women-Led Community Businesses: Incense & Candle Making

Supporting women-led home and community businesses in making everyday essentials like traditional incense sticks (dhup) and candles.

Incense sticks (dhup) and candles are used daily in Nepali homes, temples, and local shops—making them ideal products for women-led community businesses. This initiative guides women through the step-by-step process of hand-rolling aromatic incense, pouring candles, neat packaging, and quality consistency. By working collectively in local groups, women can share materials and build self-sustaining micro-enterprises rooted in their own communities.

How Our Community Model Works

Four Pillars of Women's Self-Reliance

Every activity is designed to work with modest community resources—combining adaptive adult learning, open health dialogue, hands-on craft training, and cottage business support.

01

Adaptive Teaching for Older Women

Many older women never had the opportunity to attend formal school in their youth. We organize welcoming neighborhood learning circles adapted to their life experience, eyesight, and daily schedules—focusing on practical literacy and numeracy without classroom pressure.

In Practice
Flexible, patient instruction in reading and writing Nepali and basic everyday numbers
Practical focus: signing one's own name, reading bus signs, medicine labels, and phone numbers
Basic household bookkeeping and calculating savings or small shop transactions
02

Awareness Around Reproductive Health

Reproductive health is often surrounded by silence and hesitation. We host trusted group discussions where women can learn about reproductive health, hygiene, and self-care in a respectful, stigma-free setting.

In Practice
Community-level dialogue on menstrual hygiene, maternal care, and reproductive wellbeing
Helping women recognize common health concerns early and know when to seek local clinic care
Peer-led awareness circles that encourage open conversation across generations
03

Skills Workshops: Sewing, Crocheting & Social Entrepreneurship

Inspired by the traditional Nepali 'Thaili' (drawstring pouch), our practical craft workshops teach sewing, tailoring, and crocheting alongside foundational social entrepreneurship so participants can turn handiwork into livelihood.

In Practice
Hands-on training in sewing, garment mending, crocheting, and handmade fabric bags
Peer-to-peer learning where experienced local women mentor newcomers using shared tools
Social entrepreneurship basics: cost estimation, collective buying of yarn/cloth, and local selling
04

Women-Led Community Business Growth

We support women in starting and growing community and home-based enterprises—such as hand-rolled incense (dhup) making, candle making, and other everyday household products.

In Practice
Practical training in home production such as traditional incense making and candle crafting
Encouraging group production so women can share raw materials and work collaboratively
Building steady, self-reliant supplementary income directly from home and neighborhood markets
